Clinical Thought

This commentary will examine the real-world impact of agitation associated with Alzheimer’s disease on patients and caregivers. Through a patient- and caregiver-centered perspective, it will explore how agitation affects daily routines, safety, relationships, emotional well-being, and caregiver burden, while emphasizing the importance of timely recognition, open communication, and shared decision-making. The commentary will also highlight unmet needs in care and the potential for evolving management approaches to improve quality of life for patients and those who support them.

Target Audience

This program is intended for HCPs involved in the diagnosis and management of AD agitation, including psychiatrists, geriatric psychiatrists, neurologists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize and characterize symptoms of AAD with regard to diagnostic criteria, validated assessment instruments, and differentiation from similar and/or overlapping conditions

  • Formulate individualized strategies to support non-pharmacologic interventions for patients with AAD, including appropriate roles and support for caregivers and multidisciplinary team members in home-based and long-term care settings
