The Smoldering Volcano: Agitation in Alzheimer’s Dementia

Slideset

Agitation is one of the most common and challenging behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, leading to reduced quality of life, increased caregiver stress, higher healthcare utilization, greater likelihood of institutionalization, and higher mortality. This slideset reviews the complex neurobiological and biopsychosocial factors that affect agitation in patients with Alzheimer disease and related dementias and offers effective management tools such as validated assessment tools, caregiver education, and first-line behavioral interventions, including emerging pharmacologic therapies such as brexpiprazole and dextromethorphan/bupropion.
