Accelerating Progress on Late Presentation: Preventing Advanced HIV Disease in Thailand

Clinical Thought

Despite major advances, late presentation and advanced HIV disease remain significant clinical and public health challenges across Asia. Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Appraise the burden of advanced HIV disease on individual health outcomes, population level transmission, and health system resources in Asia

  • Formulate strategies to promote earlier HIV diagnosis by addressing access barriers, reducing stigma, strengthening routine screening, and improving HCP recognition of early clinical indicators of HIV infection

  • Optimize management strategies for late presenting individuals by applying WHO aligned guidance on rapid ART initiation, appropriate OI prophylaxis and treatment, and tailored adherence support interventions

  • Select and individualize potent, well tolerated ART regimens suited to late presentation, including use of decision support tools to aid regimen choice and reduce risk of drug interactions, antiviral resistance, and treatment discontinuation
