To Stop or Not to Stop? Real-World Deprescribing Dilemmas

Psychotropic deprescribing is increasingly recognized as an essential component of high-quality psychopharmacology, yet real-world decisions rarely fit a simple rule. A medication may be partially effective but burdensome, a cross-taper may quietly become permanent polypharmacy, or a stable patient may fear that stopping treatment will undo years of progress. Through interactive cases, audience polling, and expert dialogue, this expert faculty duo will examine common controversies in deprescribing, including redundant pharmacotherapy, treatment inertia, adverse effects, long-term maintenance treatment, adherence, and the psychological meaning of medication. Faculty will apply principles from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology consensus statement while highlighting where evidence ends and individualized clinical judgment begins.
