Improving Anemia Management in Beta Thalassemia in Southeast Asia: Practical Pathways to Overcome Barriers and Optimize Treatment With Erythroid Maturation Agents

Beta-thalassemia anemia management in Southeast Asia requires coordinated strategies to reduce transfusion burden while maintaining safety, monitoring iron overload, and addressing genotype/phenotype variability. This webinar explores practical approaches to patient selection, response monitoring, transfusion visit coordination, and reassessment or referral pathways that reflect regional access and workflow challenges.

Goal Statement
This activity aims to improve learners’ understanding of how to optimally manage anemia burden safely and equitably by optimizing supportive care, appropriately implementing disease-modifying therapy, and applying practical access/workflow strategies.

Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for Southeast Asian hematologists and other healthcare professionals who care for patients with β-thalassemia.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Apply evidence-based strategies to manage anemia burden in appropriately selected adults with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia

  • Incorporate relevant genotype/phenotype factors in β-thalassemia to guide patient selection and response monitoring over time

  • Implement practical workflow solutions that optimize β-thalassemia therapy administration with transfusion care to improve continuity and reduce missed opportunities for optimization

  • Optimize treatment pathway decisions in β-thalassemia by identifying when to (a) optimize supportive care, (b) initiate/continue accessible disease-modifying therapy with appropriate monitoring, or (c) reassess and refer when feasible, aligned to local infrastructure and patient priorities.

  • Appraise recent data on α-thalassemia, considering current and near-future clinical applications
