Putting Blood-Based Biomarkers to Work in Alzheimer’s Care

Slideset

Downloadable slides on the clinical application of blood-based biomarkers (BBMs) in Alzheimer’s disease review emerging evidence supporting their diagnostic utility, with a focus on plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau217) and other biomarkers associated with amyloid pathology, tau pathology, and neurodegeneration. The slides examine comparative diagnostic performance across BBM assays and traditional cerebrospinal fluid and imaging modalities, including differences in sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy across clinical settings. Current Alzheimer’s Association guidelines and decision support recommendations are highlighted, addressing appropriate patient selection, the use of BBMs for triaging vs confirmatory testing, and interpretation of results based on pretest probability and individualized patient factors. Practical considerations for integrating BBM testing into specialized memory care and primary care are also explored, including test selection, clinical decision-making, patient counseling, ethical considerations, and barriers to implementation.
