Transforming ITP Care: Implementing Durable, Patient-Centered Treatment Strategies in Practice

Slideset

Downloadable slides on the evolving management of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), including disease pathophysiology, treatment-related burden, and current guideline-based approaches across lines of therapy. The slides review evidence for established options such as corticosteroids, rituximab, thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs), fostamatinib, and splenectomy, as well as clinical trial data for newer and emerging immune-targeted therapies, including rilzabrutinib, ianalumab, efgartigimod, and mezagitamab. Key studies reviewed include LUNA 3, VAYHIT1/2/3, and ADVANCE IV, with attention to platelet response, treatment failure, fatigue, bleeding, safety, and sustained response off treatment. The slides also emphasize durability-focused treatment goals, TPO-RA tapering, and shared decision-making to help individualize therapy according to disease control, treatment burden, adverse effects, and patient preferences.

Target Audience

This is intended for hematologists, physician associates, nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with ITP.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Apply recent clinical trial and real-world evidence to optimize therapy selection across early and later lines, including appropriate integration of novel immune-targeting mechanisms

  • Incorporate durability-focused treatment goals, including sustained response off treatment, treatment-free remission, and time to treatment failure, into individualized care plans

  • Implement patient-centered shared decision-making strategies, including use of validated patient resources and quality-of-life assessments, to improve adherence, satisfaction, and long-term outcomes
